At its core lies the observation that debates on inclusive education predominantly focus not on the creation of equitable living conditions for all, but rather on technical questions of implementation—reproducing hegemonic boundaries between what is considered “normal” and “disabled.” The empirical study presented here asks how normality is processed by special education students, who act as intermediaries between theory and practice. Methodologically, the work is situated within the framework of Reflexive Grounded Theory. In line with its logic, the two central theoretical fragments—the task of normality and normality as a task—are reconstructed and described. The study explores the constitution of the (ab)normal within the context of special education, by drawing on theoretical perspectives on normality and disability, and through the qualitative analysis of how special education students engage with concepts of normality. In doing so, it reveals how deeply embedded notions of normality are within the education and training of special education teachers. This work thus makes a fundamental contribution to critical-reflexive inclusion research and opens up avenues for further inquiry in the field of diversity-sensitive education.show moreshow less
