How can an adequate particulate model of matter be learned and taught? : From the perception of the surface of material to explanations by models: a cognitive analysis and the development of a computer based learning environment

  • In this thesis a cognitive model of the learning process of the particulate model of matter in beginner's chemistry lessons will be developed. After reviewing the past research in the field three gas phenomena for use in initial lessons are selected, which should be explained by the behaviour of submicroscopic particle models. The results of a formal task analysis of the explanation tasks show what knowledge is necessary to solve the learning problems within the framework of the curriculum. As result of the past research on misconceptions and of the task analysis an analogy based model of the learning process is proposed. Its practical application for use in chemistry lessons and empirical research is a computer software, which students can use to model their own dynamic particulate models of matter to explain simple phenomena of matter. Afterwards three empirical studies are described to explore and test the analogy based learning process and the efficiency of the modelling software. A cognitive simulation of the learning process of one empirical study will be presented which tries to generate for a protoypical learner the process of learning by analogies and using the analogies to build explanations for test tasks. The simulation use the cognitive model ACME (Holyoak & Thagard, 1989) to generate the mapping process of different analogical sources to the mental particulate model of matter. The cognitive model ECHO (Thagard, 1989) is used to simulate the process of generating an explanation for the learning tasks by means of the just developed analogies. The learning behaviour and the produced soluations of the simulations are similar to the observed human problem solving behaviour. At the end the proposed learning model and its consequences for teaching the particule model of matter will be compared with other approaches to learn the particulate model of matter.
